Celebrating with donations is one of the very best ways to celebrate, yes? Yes.

(Just so you know, clicking the links here sends some affiliate dollars my way. I don’t usually do the whole affiliate thing, and I wouldn’t be involved in this if I didn’t fully, totally, 100% believe in it. Many of the products and practitioners here are the very ones that got me on the path I’m on right now. They quite literally changed the entire course of my life.)

The Multi-Passionate Must-Haves sale will go poof at midnight Thursday, so get your paws on it now. Soooo much inspiration, learning, and support awaits!

summer fun: go to culture

Because I’m usually a total grump about summer, I made a Somewhat-Big List of Summer Fun to remind myself to continue to seek out good times, even when I feel like I’m, well, melting. You can check out the full list here

. . .

There are some activities that are so easy, so totally accessible, that you always tell yourself you can do them some other time. For me, going to Culture was one of those things. I’ve been wanting to go there for a good long while, but I’d just never gotten around to it. This weekend, with the help of the Somewhat-Big List of Summer Fun, it finally happened.

I was extremely excited to visit Culture. I’d already heard about their key lime topping, and I was planning on tasting it before I even left the house. Culture has both regular yogurt and frozen yogurt available (I’m tempted to say on tap, but that’s kind of weird, so I won’t), and they offer different flavors every day. The yogurt is made in-house from New York State milk. They then have lots and lots of uber-tasty toppings to mix and match. They also have yogurt, frozen yogurt, and cookie-yogurt sandwiches that you can take home with you.

Mary had Original (plain) frozen yogurt with a topping of raspberry sauce, white chocolate shavings, and chocolate cookie crumbs. I had Original, too, with a delectable key lime custard and a shower of graham cracker crumbs. Oh good gracious it was yummy. Better, even, than I’d expected.

A note on portion size: Mary and I both got a medium, assuming that the portions would be small, as they are at most “specialty” ice cream places in New York. We both agreed that we would definitely get small (or maybe share a small?) next time. The medium was super big.

Next time, even though I was a little bit in love with that key lime deliciousness, I’ve promised myself I’ll try a different flavor of yogurt. They post their daily flavors on Twitter. Who knows what they’ll have on my next visit, but there’ve been rumors of pistachio, apricot, and even Nutella. Mmm.

. . .

Comments: Ever been to Culture, or a similarly delicious frozen treat place?

a somewhat-big list of summer fun

Confession: I’m not the biggest fan of summer.

I know; it’s a terribly unpopular opinion to have. But I’m a Seattleite at heart, forever and always, which means that I thrive on 50 degrees and cloudy with a chance of showers.

This wouldn’t be too much of a problem, except for the fact that summer in NYC pretty much lasts five months: May through September. And while my summertime strategy has often been to hide out and hope for cooler temperatures, I don’t want to be hiding for half the year. Plus, there are summertime activities that I’ve been known to enjoy, on those clear, 70 degree July days in the Pacific Northwest, blissfully free of humidity.

So. This is my list for making the most of my summer. Even if I’m a little reticent to embrace it. Because there are quite a few summertime activities that I’m actually looking forward to (instead of dreading), and I want to remember that. I’m planning to work my way through as many of these as I can, and update you on how they go.

My Somewhat-Big List of Summer Fun

  • Have a backyard barbecue in a Brooklyn backyard
  • March in Pride (Already did this one! Go me!)
  • Swim in a lake
  • Go to an outdoor concert
  • Go to Puddin’
  • Walk a doggy from the shelter
  • Go for a hike
  • Meditate with a sangha (Did this one, too!)
  • Go to Governer’s Island (I’ve never been!) for the Jazz Age Lawn Party
  • Sit in our community garden
  • Try a new yoga class
  • Sample a Shiatsu massage
  • Go to Culture
  • Try reflexology
  • Use that one gift card to buy a colorful piece of clothing that makes me feel happy when I wear it
  • Host a sleepover!
  • Go to Providence, RI and see WaterFire
  • Read the second and third Hunger Games books
  • Have friends over for dinner. Make pie (or crisp, perhaps?) for dessert.
  • Make this salad
  • See a modern dance or ballet performance
  • Make coffee ice cubes
  • Play a board game
  • Hang out on our stoop (with plenty of bug spray slathered on)
  • Celebrate Bastille Day on Smith Street in Brooklyn
  • Record a short video
  • Pick fruit
  • Create a signature drink. Name it something awesome.

I could clearly have listed tons more options of things to do. But like I say to my coaching clients, I’d rather keep things manageable and do-able than epic and overwhelming. I can always add to my list if I happen to get to the end before summer’s over.

Comments: I would LOVE to know if you have any summertime activities you’re aiming to do. Feel free to share here, or share a link to a list you post somewhere else.

sample coaching sessions (they’re free! and fun!)

I’ve decided to start something that’s new (for me), and so I wanted to announce it here, even though I added it to the coaching page a few days ago.

As of now (er, a few days ago), I’m offering free, thirty-minute introductory coaching sessions. Yay!

What does this mean for you? Well, it means that if you’ve never tried coaching, you can give it a whirl, totally free. It’s also cool because you can gain a surprising amount of clarity and insight in a relatively short (in this case, thirty-minute) session. As a client, I’ve had lots of fifteen minute coaching sessions that were totally illuminating.

The intro. session is also a good chance for me to answer any questions you have about coaching. And if you’re thinking of continuing with coaching, we can use this session to determine whether we’re the right client/coach fit, ’cause that’s important.

Now. I realize you might be thinking that I don’t actually want to give you a free session. That maybe this will actually be a sales pitch. But that’s not the case. This is an opportunity for you to experience my coaching style, and for me to listen deeply to you and help guide you to some clarity. I’ll follow up by email after the session to give you the opportunity to continue with coaching and get some closure around what we discussed, and that’s it. It’ll be super-fun.

Interested? Email me (kylie.springman@gmail.com), and we’ll schedule a time to talk.

Comments/feedback: This is a new thing for me! And that means I’m especially open to questions and suggestions. If there are any remaining wonderments you have about intro. sessions, I’d love to answer them. If you just want to say yay, I’ll happily accept that, too.

*Gorgeous photo by Mary

rivers know this: a free wallpaper

I’m feeling grateful right now. For family, friends, and clients. For New York City (my home) and Seattle (my homeland). For the many thoughtful responses to my survey from a couple weeks back. Thank you so much for your feedback. If you’d still like to weigh in on what you want to see on Effervescence in the coming months, you’re welcome to. Really; thank you.

I created a new wallpaper for my computer with a photo I took in Seattle last week. You can download it here for yourself. Consider it a small holiday gift from me. Please also feel free to pass it on to friends.

Like many of you, I’m feeling quiet and reflective at the moment. I’m also rather excited about the start of a new year. I’m wrapping up my very last coachin’ school requirements, which means I’m going to be posting on the blog more frequently and will also have more availability for photo and coaching sessions. (Yay!) All this thrills me to no end, because it means I get to spend more time connecting deeply with people. Like you.

Thanks for being here. Seriously; I’m grateful for you.

right this minute

Right this minute, this is where I am.

I’m sitting on my coach, fuzzy brown blanket over my folded legs. Green pillow on top of blanket, computer on top of pillow. Fingers poised on computer. I’m sipping the very last of a glass of Cote du Rhone. I never drink wine (or even alcohol), but friends were over earlier, and we opened a bottle. To my surprise, it tasted just right.

To my right, there’s a copy of Style Statement, which I’m still trying to get over the genius of. I’ve been borrowing it for months from a friend, and just last night, I narrowed things down and figured out the style statement that resonates for me: genuine magic. It surprises me, and it also makes total sense.

To my left, there’s an enormous (artificial) Christmas tree. We’ve had it up since, I think, the week after Halloween. Mary decided she wanted to really get into Christmas this year, and so she did. I’m glad.

Last night, at 8:34 pm, she decided that we needed to go and get a wreath. Right that very minute. I didn’t want to go out. It was warm inside, cold outside. It had been a rough week. But I went, and it was a blast. I called a friend and wished her a happy birthday during the bus ride. We found our perfect wreath, for $9, within about a minute of getting off the bus. And now our apartment smells like Christmas every time I come in the door.

Right this minute, I’m feeling wonderfully cozy. At the back of my throat, and reaching down into my chest, I can feel some sorrow. In my head, I have a bubbly sort of light feeling of excitement.

Right this minute, where are you?

monica mccarthy, the LIFEstylista

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of photographing Monica McCarthy, LIFEstylista. She was preparing for the launch of a brand new website, and she needed photos for the new venture. Afterward, she was kind enough to take some time out from LIFEstyling to answer a few questions.

. . .

K: What do you do, and where can people find you?

M: I help busy creatives and entrepreneurs create a day-to-day lifestyle they love. People can find me on my website/blog at MonicaMcCarthy.net, on Twitter at MissMMcCarthy, or Facebook. Or running with my dog in Central Park!

K: How did you come up with the term LIFEstyling? Whatever does it mean?

M: Prior to being a LIFEstylist, I was a holistic health coach. I loved helping people feel their best, but I discovered I was just as interested in helping them accomplish their non-health goals like career, bucket list, etc. I also noticed that I really enjoyed writing about life changes on my blog — and that’s when readers started actively participating and responding. The way I personally approach LIFEstyling is combining Nourishment (what we feed our mind, body, and soul) with Adventures (or what I like to call Life Experiments). Creatives and entrepreneurs are generally a really hard-working bunch, but we often forget to create a life that supports our passions instead of draining them.

K: What’s the most important thing you’ve learned about yourself in recent history?

M: Oh, this is an easy one because it’s been coming up over and over for me: The importance of making CHOICES. These are very different from decisions. Eventually everything in our lives comes down to the choices we make. Which is awesome and super scary at the same time!

K: How has LIFEstyling impacted your own journey — how you see yourself and offer your skills to the world?

M: Wow — there’s so much to this question! I’ll start by saying, I’m really learning to walk the walk. For example, travel has always been a big priority for me, but until I realized I’d have to change my lifestyle (like quit acting, move to an apartment with cheaper rent, etc.), I didn’t make it happen. Now I’m ready to turn my big, crazy dreams into reality! The other part of that question is more difficult to answer because I’m still carving out my niche. What I do know is that I am a huge believer in the idea that everyone can have a life greater than they’ve ever imagined, and I’m incredibly grateful that people trust me to help them do just that!

K: Alright, one last one, in fill-in-the-blank form: I feel effervescent when…

M: …I’m surrounded by people I love, in a place I love, doing things I love.

Many thanks to Monica for kindly sharing her words, and her stunning self, today. Hop over to her blog for updates on her world traveling, LIFEstyling expertise, and her brand new Happy Workaholic Handbook.

friday fizz, the eighth

Elizabeth does this wonderful sort of post where she talks about what’s going on in her world, and invites us to share with her. So I wanted to make this Friday Fizz a version of that. Here goes.

. . .

All week, I’ve been nervously checking for updates on the marriage equality bill that got to the New York State Senate this week. Yep. Nervous.

Last night, Mary and I went to dinner at our favorite restaurant, and we ate this arugula salad with the most delicious vinaigrette my taste buds had ever encountered. Do you ever have moments where you debate in your head about whether or not it would be weird to ask for a recipe, because you’re afraid they’ll think you won’t come back to the restaurant, but you totally would, you just want to be able to eat this delicious vinaigrette morning, noon and night in your own home? I do.

I’ve been working on redesigning this website. (It’s true! Totally different layout coming soon; eek!) I usually don’t think about the way people organize a sidebar, or the number of pixels of padding between images. But now I’m noticing it all over the place now, and I love the intentionality of it. I find it pretty wonderful that people spend lots and lots of time on these teeny tweaks that make their websites more beautiful and navigable.

Lately, I’m really loving and feeling proud of my coaching services. I got so excited this week when a friend of mine who I thought was pretty cynical about the whole “life coaching” thing contacted me for some coaching around a tough decision she’s been pondering. I did a happy dance.

I feel like I’ve hit the jackpot in terms of reading lately. I finally picked up Tara Brach‘s Radical Acceptance from the library, which is a book I’ve been wanting to read for probably two years. It’s so great, and it’s really answering a lot of questions for me about the connections between mindfulness in everyday life and how that translates into meditation and philosophical ponderings. I’ve also been enjoying her audio meditations, some of which are free on her website. (Though, to be honest, the one I did the other night relaxed me so much I nearly fell asleep.)

. . .

This gentleman (who’s nine in this video) should have gone on tour with Madonna. I mean, wow.

Writing tips from 22 authors is wonnnderful. Thank you to Ty for sharing it.

Havi is doing this Sneak Snack Preview of her upcoming Shiva Nata training on June 30th. I signed up for the call the moment she announced it, and it promises to be splendifferous even if you’ve never done Shiva Nata before and just want to know what the heck is up with it. Oh, and it’s free. And if you can’t make it, sign up anyway, and you’ll get the recording afterward.

Shoestrings Attached: A critique of the TOMS business model.

. . .

And now, dears, I want to know: what’s happening for you this week?

friday fizz, the seventh

This week, it almost hit 100 degrees here in New York. So you’ll have to excuse me if I seem . . . melty. ‘Cause I’m feeling pretty melty.

. . .

Pop Chart Lab has some wondrously playful designs. And they’re Brooklyn-grown, in case you were wondering.

I just discovered Lori-Ann‘s shop, and it’s just sublime. Those bear pillows!

Have you encountered Rhiannon Laurie? She’s stupendous, as is her pretty new website. She talks about making friends with your monsters, and flailing, and giving yourself time, and it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy.

I recently found Sui, and it was love at first…tweet? She’s an amazing photographer, and her writing’s stupendous, too. I see lots of overlaps in our work, which is so exciting. Her last post hit me hard. Grab a box of tissues before you read it.

“Mommy, I Want to Be White.” talks about the way Black girls and women internalize racism, and includes a preview of the upcoming documentary Dark Girls. Hang onto that tissue box.

Biebershop Quartet. Oh wow.

You’re an Oxymoron. As always, J. Maureen has a point to make, and she makes it really well.

. . .

And with that, I wish you a happy weekend. Anybody else celebrating Pride tomorrow? I’ll be wearing rainbows at the Brooklyn parade.

friday fizz, the sixth

Have you ever been to Provincetown, Massachusetts? I hadn’t. Until last weekend, when Mary and I got the glorious treat of a vacation with some dear friends. Provincetown was, basically, a town full of lesbians and adorable puppies, and it smelled deliciously of the sea. All photographs in this post are, therefore, brought to you by the gorgeousness of Cape Cod.

At first, I wasn’t sure whether these designers were for real or not. But either way, I like it.

Clothes Are not for Hiding Flaws, a great article by Karen Walrond.

HIV was first discovered thirty years ago this week. This article talks about the only person to ever be cured of AIDS, and stresses the critical importance of dedicating resources to preventing the spread of the virus instead of focusing on a costly, dangerous cure.

This New York Times piece also acknowledges the 30th year of AIDS, and is juxtaposed with the first article the Times ever published on the virus, before it even had a name.

I’m feeling inspired by Institute of Play‘s values.

A video on advertising’s image of women.

Victoria is hosting a free teleclass on June 14th, all about the Six Essential Steps to Finding Your Thing. She’s superb, so I have no doubt the teleclass will be, too.

Awesome People Hanging Out Together is, well, awesome.

. . .

And with that, I leave you. Wishing you a terrific weekend, and maybe even some sand on your nose.
